SERVICE STATEMENT

Service has been an important part of my life since I was six years old. I have always served as a class leader - a bridge between students and teachers, a school council member and a representative of the local youth community for all of my years in schools and colleges in Vietnam. I recognize how being involved not only helps me grow my skills and knowledge, but it is also a way for me to make an impact and give back to the community. My involvement and contributions has been recognized with several national and local awards and certificates.

Moving to the U.S, my service started with my passion for diversity. I have been a student leader in the international community as an undergraduate and graduate student. I was involved in several programs that helped international students adjust to their new life in the U.S. In 2020, I was chosen as one of two students that served on the Asian Programs and Partnerships Task Forces hosted by the University of Oklahoma's Provost office. Besides that, I have volunteered at several professional events hosted by my department as well as the American Association of University Professors.

Transitioning to a teacher and a researcher, I have had the chance to host several social media workshops in my department and at a media conference for local high school students. I worked with professors and students for several local and national student awards selection and submission. I have been a member of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication for the last three years where I attended and presented at several of their conferences. I served as a reviewer for the Newspaper and Online News Division and the Commission for Status of Women for the 2022 annual conference. I plan to continue my involvement with AEJMC to improve my scholarly experience. One of my goals is to serve as a member of a diversity committee of AEJMC or other professional organizations such as the Society of Professional Journalists, as I recognized the impact those organizations and committees can have on journalists, especially minority journalists.
